A Truth Committee as a way forward

It is the only way forward to do any good. The various departments of our Ministery of Justice are involved in human rights violations. Our Justice system has become a system of injustice and our political system has failed to recover the damage. Ever since the IRT parliamentary inquiry, the Dutch parliament seems to have dimmed its role as a controller of political powers. In the present climate, the media is not able to express all concerns and to criticize the main issues in the political arena. I see no other options.

A Truth Committee is a commission tasked with discovering and revealing past wrongdoing by a government (or non-state actors), in the hope of resolving a deeply rooted conflict or injustice. In general, truth-seeking processes allow societies to examine and come to grips with past crimes and atrocities and prevent their future repetition. Their roles and abilities depend on their mandates, which vary widely. Many countries have felt the need to organize some sort of Truth Commission (source Wikipedia) :

  • Argentina
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • Colombia
  • Chile
  • El Salvador
  • Fiji
  • Ghana
  • Guatemala
  • Kenya
  • Liberia
  • Morocco
  • Panama
  • Peru
  • Philippines
  • Sierra Leone
  • Solomon Islands
  • South Africa
  • South Korea
  • Sri Lanka
  • East Timor
  • Uganda
  • United States

The Dutch Ministry of Justice no longer functions as a bacon for a Just Society, on the contrary. And this has been going on for more than 20 years already. Somehow government officials are obliged to help cover-up injustice, often not in a manner serving the interests of the general public and/or the individual citizens involved. When a government system is consistently involved in cover-up activities like this, it is almost impossible to bring it all out in the open through ‘normal processes’. The injustice is too widespread and has been going on for too long.

The roles and responsibilities of a Truth Committee are up for debate, but I strongly believe it is the only way forward to restore some good. Getting back to where we belong!
