Only 3 out of the 196 countries in the world are not a member of the United Nations.
- Vatican City. The independent papal state was created in 1929. They have chosen not to be a member of the UN.
- Taiwain has been a member of the UN in the past. In 1971 the People’s Republic of China (communist mainland China) replaced Taiwan in the United Nations. Taiwan has not been allowed membership of the UN ever since.
- On February 17 2008, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia. They have not gained complete international recognition and are not allowed membership of the UN.
To put the above into perspective, South-Sudan has only been a member since 2011 and Serbia since the year 2000. Both Nort and South Korea are member since 1991. [LINK]
